Farke Losing Hope Norwich Can Stay Up

Norwich manager Daniel Farke conceded they already faced a mammoth task to avoid relegation after a 2-1 home defeat by Leeds United left his team rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table on two points from 10 games.

Norwich, who were promoted to the top flight last season, are eight points adrift of safety as 17th-placed Leeds have 10 points and Farke left the impression of a manager doubting his side’s ability to claw their way out of the drop zone.

“In home games against sides around you in the table, you need to win points,” the German told Sky Sports after seeing his side give away a pair of soft goals.

“We are not playing for warm words, we are playing for points and if you don’t win them in games like this it is difficult to achieve our targets and earn the right to stay in the league.

“We have lost against the top three and didn’t have many chances. In all the other games, we have been competitive and received compliments. There was good effort and a good team performance today, but we lacked quality in both boxes.”

Raphinha fired Leeds ahead and Rodrigo clinched the game with a shot that home goalkeeper Tim Krul should have saved, cancelling out Andrew Omobamidele’s equaliser with a thumping header from a corner kick.

Farke, who saw Norwich crash to 7-0 drubbing at leaders Chelsea in the previous round, acknowledged his side needed more steel and composure to get some results.

“We were the better side in the first half,” he said. “When we equalised the atmosphere was buzzing and we had the whole stadium on our side. Then they scored and it changed the mood again. In a tight game this is decisive.”

New Zealand Thrash India to Revive Campaign

New Zealand revived their Twenty20 World Cup campaign with an eight-wicket thrashing of India, whose own semi-final hopes suffered a jolt after their second successive defeat in the tournament on Sunday.

Put in to bat, India’s rejigged top order wilted in no time and the 2007 champions crawled to 110-7 in 20 overs in the Super 12 match.

The below-par total was unlikely to test New Zealand’s batting might and so it proved.

Daryl Mitchell made a breezy 49 and Williamson remained not out on 33 as New Zealand cruised to their first win of the tournament with 33 balls to spare.

“A fantastic all-round performance from us against a formidable India side,” Williamson said after the victory.

“We were able to build pressure throughout and the way the openers came out really set the platform.”

The Group II match featured two teams who were beaten by group leaders Pakistan in their respective openers and needed a victory to put their campaigns back on track.

New Zealand have been India’s bogey team in recent global tournaments having prevailed over Virat Kohli’s men in the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup and the final of the World Test Championship this year.

India tweaked their top-order for the match for the same opponents, harnessing Ishan Kishan with KL Rahul in a left-right combination and dropping Rohit Sharma to number three.

Yet they slumped to 48-4 in the 11th over after another top-order meltdown at the Dubai International Stadium.

Trent Boult (3-20) dismissed Kishan for four, and nearly bounced out Rohit with the next ball too but Adam Milne floored the catch at long leg.

Rohit could not capitalise on the reprieve as he and Rahul holed out in the deep.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi (2-17) dealt a body blow in the 11th over when he induced a skier from Kohli which Boult pouched at long-on to send groans across the stands populated mostly by India fans.

Hardik Pandya made 23 and Ravindra Jadeja contributed 26 not out as India laboured past the 100-mark after what looked like a catching practice in the deep for the New Zealand fielders.

The New Zealand attack operated with exemplary discipline, conceding only two sixes as they subdued one of the most star-studded batting line-ups of the tournament.

New Zealand did better in their powerplay and reached halfway their target in seven overs losing only the wicket of Martin Guptill (20).

Mitchell missed his fifty by a whisker but Williamson stayed put to hit the winning run.

“I don’t think we were brave enough with bat or ball,” a dejected Kohli said after the loss.

“We didn’t have much to defend but we weren’t brave when we walked out to field,” he said.

Pakistan lead the group with three wins in as many matches, followed by Afghanistan who have played an equal number of matches and won two.

Rampant West Ham Crush Aston Villa Away

West Ham United’s Declan Rice scored a fine goal from distance as the rampant Londoners breezed past Aston Villa 4-1 in their Premier League clash at Villa Park on Sunday to pile the pressure on home manager Dean Smith.

The visitors hit the front in the seventh minute when full back Ben Johnson cut inside from the right and fired a brilliant left-footed shot into the far corner.

Jarrod Bowen almost doubled the lead minutes later from a rapid counter-attack before Villa equalised in the 34th through Ollie Watkins, who finished with aplomb following a reverse pass from Matty Cash.

West Ham, however, kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Rice restored their lead before halftime.

The home side’s hopes of a comeback suffered a blow when Ezri Konsa was sent off almost immediately after the restart for impeding Bowen who was clear on goal.

Villa rallied valiantly and created a string of chances but were caught twice on the break, with Pablo Fornals and Bowen each finishing off slick counter-attacking moves and putting the game beyond Villa’s reach.

West Ham are fourth in the standings with 20 points — behind champions Manchester City on goal difference — after 10 games. Villa are 10 points adrift of the Hammers in 15th.

Leeds Beat Norwich To Stay Out Of Drop Zone

Second-half goals from Raphinha and Rodrigo Moreno earned Leeds United a 2-1 win away at Norwich City in the Premier League on Sunday, keeping the visitors out of the relegation zone and the home side nailed to the bottom of the table after 10 matches.

Leeds stayed 17th on 10 points from as many games, three above 18th-placed Burnley, while promoted Norwich were left propping up the table on two points, still without a win.

Leeds Boss Marcelo Bielsa was relieved that his side ground out the win after an industrious performance, and he voiced his support for his Norwich counterpart Daniel Farke.

“A very important win given our position in the table, due to the results we have been obtaining that are not positive,” Bielsa told Sky Sports.

“The job of a coach has some very difficult things you have to live with. Especially with Norwich’s manager, he has shown a big spiritual fortitude and I hope he can come back from this situation.”

Rodrigo stressed how important it was for Leeds to get their first away win of the season.

“It is more than three points; we played against a team who is having a bad moment, like us,” the Spaniard said. “It is an important result and we are looking forward to the next game.”

A dull first half produced a solitary chance as Leeds forward Daniel James saw his shot cleared off the line by Grant Hanley while Norwich were reduced to a pair of tame long-range efforts by Teemu Pukki and Mathias Normann.

The contest sprang to life in a frantic four-minute spell after the break, with Rodrigo firing Leeds ahead in the 56th minute as he cut inside two defenders and drove in a low shot.

Norwich levelled two minutes later when 19-year old defender Andrew Omobamidele rose above his markers to beat Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier with a towering header which went in off the underside of the bar.

The home side’s joy was short-lived, however, as Rodrigo forced another twist on the hour mark with a swerving low shot which squeezed in under home keeper Tim Krul. Norwich pressed in the closing stages but failed to trouble the visitors.

Djokovic Commits To Doubles Duty On Return To Action In Paris

Novak Djokovic has signed up for both singles and doubles duty at next week’s Paris Masters, as the Serbian world number one returns to competitive action for the first time since his defeat in the U.S. Open final to Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Djokovic, who is level with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on 20 major titles, has not played since coming up short last month in his bid for a calendar Grand Slam, losing in straight sets to Medvedev at Flushing Meadows.

The 34-year-old will be the top seed at the Masters 1000 event in Bercy, where he is a five-time champion, and will also team up with countryman Filip Krajinovic with an eye on some practice ahead of the Davis Cup at the end of November.

“He’s going to play with Krajinovic, his buddy from the Davis Cup,” tournament director Guy Forget told reporters on Saturday.

“He said he would commit himself to play for the Davis Cup for his own country. This is why he wanted to play doubles here.

“We don’t often see him play doubles, so we’re delighted. It’s rare to see a No. 1 playing a Masters 1000 in doubles.”

After a first round bye, Djokovic will open his Paris Masters singles campaign either against Italian Fabio Fognini or Marton Fucsovics from Hungary.

Arsenal’s Ramsdale Delighted With Leicester Heroics

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale said his superb performance in Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City was a case of everything working in his favour while manager Mikel Arteta called on the 23-year-old to remain grounded.

Ramsdale was in inspired form here at the King Power Stadium as Arsenal, who had to endure a difficult start to the campaign after finishing eighth last season, made it nine matches unbeaten here in all competitions.

His acrobatic leap to keep James Maddison’s free-kick out before half time was a contender for save of the season, as he palmed the ball away in spectacular fashion to stop it going into the top corner.

That effort left former goalkeepers including David Seaman and Peter Schmeichel awestruck while Arsenal supporters chanted “England number one”.

“Maddison is a top free-kick taker. I’ve come up against him a couple of times in the league and training with the Under-21s so I was worried he was going to reverse it,” Ramsdale told BT Sport.

“He didn’t have too much pace on it which allowed me to get there, but it was just one of those days where it seemed like I was saving everything which was thrown at me and the lads were blocking everything – top day all round.”

Arteta said Ramsdale, who has yet to win a full international cap, must keep working hard.

“I think when you dream big, it’s always positive. Keep your feet on the ground,” Arteta said.

“He needs to be doing what he’s doing every day. Train the way he does, work as hard as he does, look after himself, have the mentality he has, and good performances … the rest will come.”

Ronaldo Hails ‘Unbelievable’ Man Utd Performance Against Spurs

Manchester United’s 3-0 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday was the perfect antidote after being left disappointed and under some pressure after a heavy defeat by Liverpool last week, forward Cristiano Ronaldo said.

United came into the contest in north London on the back of a 5-0 hammering by their bitter rivals Liverpool that heaped the pressure here on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but goals from Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford sealed a comfortable win here.

“We knew before the game that we had a tough week after a result that we didn’t expect,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports. The team was a little bit under pressure, a little bit sad, but we knew we could give a good answer.

“We played good, started well. Of course my job is to help the team with my experience, my goals, my assists and I did that and I feel so pleased. In terms of the team, it was an unbelievable performance.”

Ronaldo, who scored a superb volley before setting up Cavani in the second half, said he was delighted the team could snap a poor run of four games without victory.

“The criticisms are always there,” Ronaldo said. “It doesn’t bother me because I have played 18 years of football, so I know that one day people will say ‘we’re perfect’ and another day they will say ‘we’re crap’.

“I know that and we have to deal with that, but it’s always better when the people praise you and they are happy with you. Sometimes life is like that, sometimes we have to pass through bad moments and we have to change and we changed today.”

United rose to fifth in the standings with 17 points from 10 matches. They visit Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Zaha Suffers Racist Abuse Online After Palace Stun Man City

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha has been subjected to racist abuse online and the 28-year-old shared screenshots of some of the comments after Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Manchester City.

Zaha, who scored the opening goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium, was brought down by Aymeric Laporte which resulted in the City defender receiving a straight red card in first-half stoppage time.

The Ivory Coast international, who has previously been targeted online, posted images of the racist messages that he received on Instagram after the game and asked social media companies to take the problem seriously.

“This message isn’t for me to get a million messages saying ‘we stand with you’ and ‘it’s disgusting’ or about me getting sympathy,” Zaha wrote here on Instagram. “I’m not here for all the nonsense that’s being done instead of fixing the actual problem.

“I don’t mind abuse because nowadays it comes with doing the job I do even though it’s not an excuse but my colour will always be the real problem but it’s fine because I’ll always be BLACK AND PROUD.

“Speak to me when you actually take this issue seriously.”

Facebook, which owns Instagram, did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Several players have been subjected to racial abuse online in recent months, especially in the Premier League, and English soccer has been urging social media firms to do more to tackle the problem.

Instagram had previously announced new measures and Twitter vowed to continue its efforts after taking action on cases of abuse related to soccer in Britain.

Earlier this year, Zaha said he would stop “taking a knee” here before games as part of English football’s anti-racism campaign because he believed the meaning of the “degrading” gesture had been lost.

Spurs Must Show More Pride After United Drubbing – Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said his team needed to show more pride after a humbling 3-0 home defeat by Manchester United on Saturday — their fifth loss in their opening 10 Premier League games of the season.

Lloris and his team mates were booed off at the final whistle as the spotlight swung from Manchester United’s under-pressure manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Tottenham’s Nuno Espirito Santo.

Tottenham failed to manage a shot on target as Nuno became the first manager of the club to lose half of his first 10 league games in charge since Christian Gross who was sacked in 1998 after less than a year at the helm.

It was Tottenham’s third 3-0 defeat of the season and they were also heavily criticised after a 3-1 loss at Arsenal.

“We expect more. We expect more belief. More pride,” Lloris said. “This is not the first time (we have played this poorly), even at home. We expected more against Chelsea,” the Frenchman told Sky Sports.

“We need to re-analyse and find some good. It’s not a good moment at all. We concede too much, we don’t score enough, we don’t create enough.”

Tottenham slipped to eighth in the Premier League table and once again they looked short of ideas with striker Harry Kane a shadow of his former self.

The England captain has scored only once in the league this season although there was precious little invention in a Tottenham side who have netted nine times in 10 league games.

Saturday’s lacklustre display was the first time in seven years that Spurs failed to have an attempt on target in a Premier League home match.

“We’ve only played 10 games in the league, but there’s too much up and down. In one game we go through so many emotions. We seem to always go down. Confidence is key also,” Lloris said.

Nuno offered a blunt reaction to his side’s display.

“Poor performance. Not too many words. We didn’t play good. United were stronger than us,” the Portuguese said.

Miller’s Final-Over Heroics Earn Proteas Last-Gasp World Cup Win Over Sri Lanka

David Miller struck two consecutive sixes in the final over to help South Africa edge Sri Lanka by four wickets in a thrilling but low-scoring Twenty20 World Cup match in Sharjah on Saturday.

Needing 15 in the last over for their second Super 12 win, left-hander Miller deposited the second and third balls from paceman Lahiru Kumara over the legside boundary to help South Africa chase down a 143-run target with one ball to spare.

Kagiso Rabada also hit a six and a four in an unbeaten 13 off seven balls, giving able support to Miller, who smashed 23 off 13 balls.

The duo got together with South Africa looking all at sea in their chase after Sri Lanka leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga completed a hat-trick across two overs.

The 24-year-old Hasaranga dismissed Aiden Markram on the final ball of his third over and returned for his last over to send back South Africa captain Temba Bavuma, who top-scored for his side with 46, and Dwaine Pretorius for the hat-trick.

South Africa welcomed Quinton de Kock back to the side after the wicketkeeper-batter skipped the win against West Indies after opposing taking a knee in support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

De Kock did not last long at the crease, however, and along with opening partner Reeza Hendricks was out to fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera in a double blow for South Africa in the fourth over.

“I was a bit tense,” Bavuma said at the presentation. “(But) I had lot of confidence in the fact that David was there.

“David hadn’t done that for a long time for us and it was a good time coming. He’s probably got the most beautiful swing I’ve seen from a batter, it’s almost like a golf swing.”

Earlier, left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi and all-rounder Pretorius picked up three wickets each as Sri Lanka were bundled out for 142 on the final delivery of their innings after they were put in to bat.

Opener Pathum Nissanka played the anchor’s role before opening his shoulders to lift the scoring rate during his 58-ball knock of 72.

Nissanka added 41 during a brisk second-wicket stand with Charith Asalanka but the latter’s run out after a 14-ball 21 pegged back the island nation.

Shamsi, the top-ranked bowler in the format, then spun a web around the Sri Lanka batters, sending back Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga to reduce them to 91-5.

Pretorius then carved through the middle and lower-order batting, picking up three wickets including that of Nissanka, to restrict them.

It was the second loss for Sri Lanka and with England, Australia and South Africa with two wins each in Group One, their chances of progressing to the semi-finals appear slim.

“I was looking for the points table. I think it’s really hard for us after this game,” Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka said. “But still we got a lot of pride in us, so next two games we hope to win and keep our pride.”

Man United Ease Pressure On Solskjaer With Win At Spurs

Manchester United thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford in the Premier League on Saturday to ease the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Ronaldo struck in the 39th minute with a perfect right-foot volley into the far corner of Hugo Lloris’s net from a glorious pass by Portuguese compatriot Bruno Fernandes.

Cavani added the second in the 64th and substitute Rashford wrapped up a comfortable win four minutes from time as United put last weekend’s 5-0 home drubbing by Liverpool behind them.

United climbed to fifth on 17 points from 10 games, while Nuno Espirito Santo’s shot-shy Spurs side, who failed to trouble United goalkeeper David De Gea, are eighth on 15.

United came into the match following a week in which questions were raised about the future of Solskjaer after arch-rivals Liverpool ran them ragged at Old Trafford on Sunday.

But led by the class of Ronaldo the visitors dug in and battled for their under-fire boss in a first half which ended with the Portuguese volleying the opener to settle his side.

It was Ronaldo’s 11th goal in 19 games against Spurs and the forward has scored more times against the London side than any other English team during his career.

Tottenham struggled to carve out any clear openings with Harry Kane lacking support despite the efforts of Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura, whose substitution was booed by the home fans.

Ten minutes later Cavani was played through by Ronaldo and the Uruguayan calmly clipped the ball into the net to give United breathing space and silence the disgruntled home crowd.

It was left for Rashford to come off the bench and apply the coup de grace with a simple finish to give Solskjaer hope that he can turn the season around and save his job.

By contrast, Tottenham manager Nuno now finds the spotlight fixed on his tenure in his first season in charge with his side lacking creativity as they failed to manage a shot on target.

Spurs have scored their fewest goals after 10 league games since 2013-14 when they also got nine, while United kept their second clean sheet in 22 games in all competitions.

James Double Blasts Chelsea To Comfortable Win At Newcastle

Even without a recognised striker on the pitch Chelsea proved far too strong for Newcastle United as Reece James struck twice to fire the Premier League leaders to a 3-0 win at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The painfully unambitious hosts managed to hold out for 65 minutes before James smashed a left-footer past Karl Darlow before belting a right-foot shot into the same part of the net 12 minutes later.

Jorginho’s converted penalty in the 81st minute emphasised the domination of Thomas Tuchel’s team who could not have asked for a better day with title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool both dropping points.

For Newcastle, who finally managed a shot on target after 83 minutes, it was another game in which their shortcomings on the pitch were painfully apparent. They have failed to win any of their first 10 league games this season — only the third time that has happened in the club’s history.

Chelsea lead the standings with 25 points, three ahead of Liverpool and five ahead of City.

Newcastle, for all the riches of their Saudi Arabian owners, are deep in relegation trouble in 19th place with four points.

Valiant Brighton Fight Back To Hold Liverpool To A Draw

Brighton & Hove Albion fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 Premier League draw at Liverpool on Saturday, as Enock Mwepu and Leandro Trossard spoiled what would have been a perfect week for the Merseyside club.

Following a 5-0 drubbing of Manchester United on Sunday and Wednesday’s 2-0 League Cup win at Preston North End, Liverpool looked set to march on after goals from Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mane put them in control.

Henderson fired the home side into a fourth-minute lead with a first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area after he was teed up by Mohamed Salah, and Mane made it 2-0 with a diving header in the 24th from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross.

Brighton pulled one back in the 41st minute out of the blue as Zambian midfielder Mwepu scored his first Premier League goal with a delightful long-range effort that sailed over Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Brighton gained the upper hand after the break and drew level in the 65th minute when Trossard side-stepped his marker and drove a low shot past Alisson.

The end-to-end action at Anfield saw three goals ruled out after VAR checks, as Mane had one chalked off for handball and Salah another for offside while Trossard also saw his effort scrapped for offside at the other end.

Ramsdale Stars As Arsenal Continue Revival With Win At Leicester

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was the star of the show as Arsenal made it nine games unbeaten in all competitions with a 2-0 victory at Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Arsenal have been steadily improving under coach Mikel Arteta after a difficult start to the season, following on from last term’s eighth-placed finish.

The victory that kept Arsenal climbing the table on Saturday – they are now up to fifth in the standings with other teams still to play this weekend – came about thanks to the big helping hands of their goalkeeper.

Arsenal flew out of the traps at the King Power Stadium, taking a two-goal lead inside 18 minutes through Brazilian centre Gabriel Magalhaes and livewire Emile Smith Rowe.

Leicester grew into the match after their laboured start and had several chances to get themselves back into the contest before half time, only to find Gunners keeper Ramsdale in inspired form.

Ramsdale’s leap to keep James Maddison’s free-kick out just before half time was a contender for save of the season, as he clawed the ball away in spectacular fashion to prevent it flying into the top corner.

After the break, Leicester continued to create chances which on another day they would have converted, but Ramsdale refused to be beaten, bailing his side out time and again to ensure a vital victory on Arsenal’s road to recovery.

A seventh win in that unbeaten run of nine means Arsenal climbed above Leicester who drop to 10th, with their inconsistent form this term hurting them.

“It is a superb result away from home against a top team,” Ramsdale told BT Sport. “We started really well and got two good goals.

“Thankfully it was one of those afternoons that I contributed. We should have had a few more clean sheets (this season) but I’m happy with this one.”

The visitors did not have to wait long for the opener, as Gabriel flicked a header home from Bukayo Saka’s corner.

Arsenal continued to completely dominate the hosts, who beat Manchester United in their last home league match, and soon enough Smith Rowe latched onto the loose ball to make it two.

Ramsdale’s first intervention came in the 29th minute as he sprung to his right to deny Kelechi Iheanacho, before the Arsenal keeper pulled out a stop we will be seeing for years to come from Maddison. He even had the awareness to get to his feet to keep out the rebound as well.

Leicester full back Luke Thomas drilled wide early in the second half as Leicester continued to press, before another brilliant Ramsdale save denied Ademola Lookman.

Ramsdale was then at it again to smother at the feet of Harvey Barnes, as he proved unbeatable.

“Their keeper made a great save but at 2-0 we had to do something in the game,” Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers said.

“Second half we were much the better team. The keeper made great saves but you rue the start – that’s what cost you. Kasper (Schmeichel) didn’t have much to do.”

Of the goalkeepers to have faced more than two shots on target this season, only Edouard Mendy (89.7%) is enjoying a higher save percentage than Ramsdale (85.7%), who has saved 24 of the 28 shots on target he has faced.

Eskom Shows Leadership In Dealing With Blackouts – ANC

The ANC says Eskom has shown great leadership in dealing with the recent blackouts in the country.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe says Eskom’s response has created a renewed sense of confidence.

This comes after the ANC said earlier this week that it suspected the power cuts were deliberate actions by some within Eskom for political ends.

Mabe spoke at the party’s final Siyanqoba rally in Soweto.

“What has been comforting is that the leadership of Eskom on the very same day did come out to address the public in a webinar really outlining what they are doing. That is the kind of leadership that is required,” Mabe said.

“When the leadership of Eskom, when the minister comes out to brief the public on what is being done to mitigate and resolve the problem, it does create a sense of confidence. The minister of mineral resources was also out talking about how far they are in terms of renewables and approving those independent power producers.”

Hamilton Finding New Sense Of Purpose In Diversity Drive

Lewis Hamilton says his drive for social justice, and campaigning for diversity, has given his life a real purpose while also helping prolong his record-breaking Formula One career.

The 36-year-old Mercedes driver, winner of a record 100 grands prix, is chasing an unprecedented eighth world championship in a tight battle with Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, 24.

Dutchman Verstappen is 12 points clear with five races remaining.

Hamilton told Sky Sports television that his campaign, and use of his platform to push the conversation, had given him fresh energy and made him mentally stronger than ever.

“This year I’ve not been drawing on past experiences, I’ve been drawing on feeding off this energy of doing this positive work,” he said.

“So now it’s the work that I’m doing in the background and then I’m turning up and I’m enjoying this job.

“Is it helping me race? I think so, yeah. It’s like my new drive and I feel like it’s giving me more longevity because it’s a lot of work we have to do. I feel like it also gives my life real purpose.”

Britain’s Hamilton said he had days when he did not want to train and was unsure about continuing.

“There’s definitely been times where I’m like, I don’t know if I can keep going, or maybe there’s something else I want to do. But I don’t think I’d found my purpose until last year,” he said.

“Now I feel like I have a mission in life and it’s not about just winning championships and races, that’s all cool, but actually being able to make an impact to help youngsters coming through.”

The sport’s only Black driver hailed increasingly outspoken German four times world champion Sebastian Vettel as well as the younger drivers.

“I’m really proud of this next generation coming along, but we can still encourage them to be more invested and more understanding,” he said.

“When you’re young, all you’re thinking about is winning. You don’t have time for a lot of these other things. Well, you think you don’t, but you actually do. And that’s what we’ve got to get across.”

Disappointed Raducanu Still Adjusting To Life On Tour

U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu said she was still coming to terms with the fast pace of life on tour but vowed to brush aside her disappointing loss in the Transylvania Open on Friday and come back stronger.

Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk defeated the misfiring 18-year-old 6-2 6-1 in under an hour at the WTA 250 event in Cluj-Napoca, with the Brit committing 41 unforced errors during the contest.

“I wasn’t physically feeling 100%. I was quite tired and lethargic today. Sometimes you just have those days where you don’t feel your best,” Raducanu told reporters. “I knew from the morning, I knew from practice.

“I wanted to go out there on the court and try my best and see how it was going to go, maybe it would go better. But I just couldn’t get it going today unfortunately.

“It’s just disappointing that you have these days. It’s not a nice feeling to have, but I just need to move on from it and brush it off. And then I’ll be back in another tournament soon.”

Raducanu stunningly won the Flushing Meadows title in September as a qualifier and after the Grand Slam announced that she would no longer be working with former Davis Cup player Andrew Richardson.

The Brit said “things are looking up, so it’s going in a good direction” with her search for a new coach.

Raducanu won her first two matches on the WTA tour this week and is scheduled to play her last tournament of the season at the Nov. 6-12 Upper Austria Ladies Linz.

“I think it’s just the last six months,” she said. “It’s been a lot of learnings and I’ve experienced a lot in the last six months with not so much gaps.

“I’m just adapting to the fast-paced life of the tour and obviously still very new to it, so it’s still going to take me some time to adjust.

“After Linz I’ll probably have a week off just to reset and (be) mentally and physically fresh for the tough preseason. It’s going to be my first one and from what I’ve heard, it’s a very difficult four weeks physically.”

Man Utd Must Come Out Fighting After Liverpool Blow – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his team’s first half capitulation against Liverpool was like a boxer being punched out in the opening minutes of a bout and sought a strong response from them.

Solskjaer came under intense criticism here following United’s shocking 5-0 Premier League defeat by Liverpool last Sunday – a game in which his team let in four goals in the first half to leave supporters at Old Trafford stunned.

“The performance wasn’t acceptable. It felt like we were a boxer being punch drunk and knocked down in the first minutes, first round,” Solskjaer told reporters ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Tottenham Hotspur in London.

“You see Tyson Fury when he gets knocked down a couple of times, it’s remarkable how calm and composed he is on the floor, counts to six, seven, eight and he gets up and goes again. We got up too early and tried to sort it.”

Solskjaer, whose seventh-placed side are without a victory in four league matches and have conceded nine goals in their last two defeats, said that he was in touch with the United board but did not seek assurances about his job.

“When you have a performance and a spell like we’ve had, that’s not what I ask for,” Solskjaer added. “My job is to put things right and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Di Maria Shines, Messi Injured As PSG Beat Lille To Go 10 Points Clear

Angel Di Maria showed his worth as he set up the first and scored the winner to give Paris St Germain a 2-1 win against champions Lille in Ligue 1 after Lionel Messi limped off injured on Friday.

In the absence of Kylian Mbappe, who is suffering from an infection, Di Maria shone throughout the game, providing captain Marquinhos with the equaliser after Jonathan David’s opener before finding the back of the net two minutes from time.

After Messi left the pitch with a muscle problem, the Argentine winger found his range to put leaders PSG on 31 points from 12 games, 10 ahead of second-placed RC Lens.

Lille, who deserved better after a convincing first half, are 11th with 15 points.

Both teams went end-to-end in an entertaining opening half but Lille showed more poise and it took a superb save from Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Burak Yilmaz in the first minute.

Lille, looking more like the team that dominated the league last season, were rewarded in the 31st minute when David opened his right foot to deflect Yilmaz’s powerful cross into the roof of the net from point-blank range.

Messi, who has yet to score for PSG in five league appearances, was replaced by Mauro Icardi as he appeared to be still suffering from the muscle problem that forced him to miss training with the team on Thursday.

“It was a precaution, and we hope he will be available for the game against Leipzig,” said coach Mauricio Pochettino, referring to Wednesday’s Champions League Group A game.

Lille came close to doubling the tally through David but Donnarumma pulled another brilliant save to keep the home side afloat.

The Italy keeper was at it again to tip away a whipped shot from Yilmaz shortly before the hour.

But Angel Di Maria and Neymar were a constant threat as PSG started to pile the pressure. It paid off in the 74th minute when Marquinhos latched onto a superb lofted cross from Di Maria to make it 1-1.

PSG came close to gaining the advantage five minutes from time but Ivo Grbic parried Icardi’s low shot with his right foot.

The winner came shortly after when Di Maria coolly slotted the ball past Grbic with a low shot from Neymar’s pass inside the box.

Pakistan Win Afghan Thriller To Close In On Semis Berth

Pakistan put one foot in the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup after Asif Ali’s scintillating power-hitting secured their nervy five-wicket victory against Afghanistan in the Super 12 stage of the tournament on Friday.

The 2009 champions restricted neighbours Afghanistan to a modest 147-6 in a match between the top two teams in Group II at Dubai International Stadium.

Skipper Babar Azam anchored Pakistan’s chase with a fluent 51 but it was Asif who smashed four sixes in the penultimate over from Karim Janat to clinch the see-saw contest with six balls to spare.

Having beaten India and New Zealand in their first two matches, Pakistan are effectively in the last four with clashes against minnows Namibia and Scotland remaining.

“Afghanistan have some of the best spinners, they were getting a lot of help and bowling really well,” Babar said.

“I wanted to stay till the end but got out unfortunately. So credit to Asif Ali.

“Asif has played many such innings at the Pakistan Super League. I was very confident he’d get us out of any trouble,” Babar added.

Earlier, Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi repeatedly hit Hazratullah Zazai’s pad after Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi elected to bat.

Pakistan blew a review trying to get Zazai lbw but went on to wreck Afghanistan’s top order to reduce them to 39-4 in the sixth over.

Haris Rauf took a brilliant tumbling catch in the second over to send back Zazai and then caught Asghar Afghan off his own bowling.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz nearly ran himself out after a mix-up with Afghan but could not capitalise on the reprieve and Afghanistan lost the top half of their batting order even before the halfway stage of their innings.

Nabi and Gulbadan Naib came to Afghanistan’s rescue striking identical unbeaten 35s to lend some respectability to their total.

“We didn’t start really well, the total on the board was decent but maybe not enough,” Nabi said after their first loss of the tournament.

“There are many positives to take from this match. We fought to the end and it’s given us more motivation to win games.”

Pakistan lost Mohammed Rizwan early in their reply but Babar and Fakhar Zaman (30) combined to shave off half the target.

Babar, then on 36, was adjudged lbw to Rashid Khan but the Pakistan skipper successfully reviewed the decision which was overturned.

Fakhar was not so lucky and fell lbw to Nabi in the next over blowing a review in his bid to prolong his stay.

Rashid (2-26) dismissed Mohammad Hafeez and Babar to inject fresh drama into the contest but the Afghans, who dropped two late catches, failed to ramp up pressure.

Pakistan needed 24 runs off the last two overs and Asif sealed the victory with an incendiary 25 not out off just seven balls, which also earned him the man-of-the-match award.

More than 1000 ticketless Afghan fans tried to forcibly enter the stadium for the match and were thwarted by the local police.

West Ham’s Moyes Waiting With Interest Over Czech Investor Reports

West Ham United manager David Moyes said he would “wait with interest” to find out whether reports of a potential investment in the club by a Czech billionaire comes to fruition and was focusing on maintaining his side’s flying start to the season.

The club’s derby win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend lifted them to fourth in the Premier League and on Wednesday they ended Manchester City’s four-year hold on the League Cup with a shootout win to reach the last eight.

West Ham have won their opening three matches in the Europa League, their first foray in continental competition (excluding qualifiers) since 2006, and have clearance to expand the London Stadium and make it the second-highest capacity in England.

Media reports have linked Daniel Kretinsky with a possible investment in West Ham, with the fans now full of optimism for a club that spent much of the last decade mired in mediocrity.

West Ham have declined to comment on this week’s reports that Kretinsky is seeking to buy a 27% stake in the club.

Moyes, in his second spell at the club, was asked at his news conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League visit to Aston Villa whether he knew anything of the reported Kretinsky bid.

“Just the same rumours that you have. I don’t know any more than you know. But it sounds as if something is happening, yes,” the former Everton and Manchester United boss told reporters.

Moyes must take a huge amount of credit for turning West Ham into a club now focused on challenging for silverware rather than fighting relegation battles.

His side are unbeaten away from home in all competitions this season and Moyes said there was now a “feelgood factor” established at a club with huge potential.

“When I came in I thought West Ham needed to try and make the team better and grow the team,” he said.

“We needed to become a better side and I’m sure there are people off the field who are looking into ways they can make West Ham a better football club off the field as well.

“But at the moment my job is to try and get the team right. I could not tell you an awful lot about the other stuff and I will wait with interest as much as you are waiting.”

While a run to the League Cup quarter-finals has given fans hope of some long-awaited silverware, Moyes said becoming a club challenging near the top of the Premier League was a more worthy achievement.

“Being a cup side you can get really good draws and you can find a way to get through so there are ways you can win a cup. I’ve always felt that being a good league team is always the first priority,” he said.

“The next game is a Premier League game against Aston Villa and that is certainly the biggest priority.”

Solskjaer Hits Out At ‘Lies’

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed midfielder Paul Pogba’s decision to publicly denounce a media report as “fake news” and vowed to fight back from the difficult position he has found himself in.

Solskjaer came under intense criticism after United’s shocking 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool on Sunday but ahead of Saturday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur the Norwegian was in bullish mood. read more

Pogba had posted a response to a tabloid media report that said he had “snubbed” Solskjaer and stopped talks over a possible new contract with the club, labelling it “fake news” and commenting: “Big lies to make headlines”.

“We expect to be criticised because, hands up, the performance wasn’t good enough, you expect to hear it from right, left and centre, but we don’t expect or can’t accept when lies are being made up,” said Solskjaer.

“Paul came to me and told me what he has put out on his social media account and … when it is blatant lies we have got to stand up and say so,” added the Norwegian.

“All the opinions and reports, fine but don’t make up lies about players or me,” he said.

The United boss has received a timely boost on the injury front with French defender Raphael Varane fit again after missing the last two games due to a thigh injury picked up on international duty.

The only player who is not available for the trip to Spurs is Pogba who is suspended after his red card against Liverpool.

Solskjaer confirmed he had met with former manager Alex Ferguson during the week after the 13-times Premier League champions attended a commercial event at the club’s training ground.

“I met him and spoke to him, just for a brief moment. I’ve been through some very bad moments here as a player and when I’ve been a coach and a manager as well,” he said.

“I’ve had to deal with setbacks, there’s probably been two or three crises at least since I became the manager here. One thing I can say is that I’ll always give it a good shot and fight back.”

THE TRENCHES

Solskjaer added he had a good week at the training ground with the players as they seek to put right the errors which cost them so dearly against Liverpool and he suggested that reports of dressing room divisions were wide of the mark.

“When you come in for criticism, like you do, you come into the trenches with your team mates and that reaction I’ve seen this week. Whatever this club has been through before, it’s always about getting through with courage, self-belief, sticking together, he said.

“We’ve had a good week, a good week on the training field, I have to say that.

“We need a reaction and it’s my job as well to put the players in the right frame of mind, I’m responsible for the reaction, the result, the performance. We’ve worked on the pitch, we’ve worked on everything that needs to be sorted for a footballer.

“It’s not just frame of mind, it’s the approach, strategy, gameplan, tactics, technically. We’ve had a good week and I feel the boys are ready to give their best, as they always do. Of course, nothing went to plan (against Liverpool) and that was nowhere near our best,” he said.

United are seventh in the table, eight points adrift of Chelsea and trailing second-placed Liverpool by seven points. They are one place and one point behind Spurs after nine games.

We’ll Know In Mid-November If SA’s Escaped Elections Unscathed – Phaahla

Health Minister Joe Phaahla said that the next three days would be “very risky” as political parties tried to drum up support from voters ahead of Monday’s local government elections.

For now, lockdown regulations limit outdoor gatherings to 2,000 people while indoor capacity is capped at 750.

Phaahla said that he was concerned that political gatherings could turn into super spreader events, which could lead to a spike in COVID-19 infections by the middle of November.

He is appealing to political parties to limit the numbers of supporters allowed at gatherings.

“We will only know after the 15th of November if we’ve gone through these elections safely, whether we’ve escaped unscathed through the election campaign and also through the elections themselves,” Minister Phaahla said.

Ramaphosa Confident Eskom Issues Will Be Resolved

ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa doesn’t believe the latest blackouts are intentional.

That’s in contrast to the governing party’s statement on Wednesday.

The ANC said power cuts may have been deliberate action from some within Eskom for political ends.

That’s after the beleaguered power utility implemented Stage 4 power cuts.

Ramaphosa says this is not the time to point fingers.

He’s reiterated Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan’s remarks that power cuts will be over by the weekend.

He also apologised for the electricity crisis.

Ramaphosa was on the campaign trail in Ekurhuleni ahead of elections on Monday.
