Vaccinations Vital In Fighting Omicron – SAMRC

The South African Medical Research Council is warning against reading too much into early Omicron reports and urges people to get their vaccinations.

It says early data is based on a very small number of patients.

“Vaccination is still our only serious protection against it and if we had a higher rate of vaccination then we would see even fewer admissions,” he said.

“So I don’t think we should for a moment think that our hospitals are not going to be overwhelmed, they will be, because remember in past waves people could not get a hospital bed and so if we have fewer admissions in this wave, I can tell you that those beds that become available are going to be rapidly taken up by people who could not get a hospital bed before. We should still prepare for a rough time in this fourth wave.”

Moving To The Cloud – Is It Right For Your Business?

If the pandemic taught us one thing, it’s that remote work is a viable alternative to large, expensive offices and IT infrastructure and hardware.

“Many South African businesses have slashed their office space after realising that they could save money while still being fully operational remotely,” says Andrew Cruise, Managing Director of vendor-neutral cloud infrastructure provider, Routed.

And though only around 5% of the South African enterprise market is fully on the cloud, according to Cruise, many more are now considering this option. “Work from home mandated as a result of the pandemic proved to many organisations that the need for physical hardware and infrastructure is fading as fast as the idea that everyone has to work from an office,” says Cruise.

Here’s what you need to know to make the right decision for your business.

The benefits

Globally there has been a return to office environments whether full time or in a hybrid-approach, but for most in South Africa many employees remain working from home at least for the foreseeable future, says Cruise. “Companies are realising that there’s no need to have on-premises hardware anymore, because cloud provides a much more flexible solution. Even companies that have successfully moved back to the office are seeing a need for cloud services in order to have remote access when needed.”

Furthermore, the cloud is more cost-effective in the long run – with less risk.

“Moving to the cloud means you’re effectively renting hardware, which removes the hidden costs of mitigating against failures, disaster recovery and maintenance when you run your own hardware. Though it may seem expensive to move initially, it can save companies a bundle in on-premise hardware as well as remove the risk of broken or stolen hardware – which could, of course, result in considerable operational losses on top of the physical loss. The good cloud providers are constantly refreshing their equipment, meaning you benefit from constantly improving performance, and won’t have hardware upgrade costs every five years.”

The hurdles

That being said, it doesn’t necessarily make sense to move everything to the cloud. “There’s still some reasons to keep certain things on-premises, including for compliance purposes. But ultimately, the cloud offers a lower total cost of ownership,” says Cruise.

Secondly, good internet is an essential when it comes to cloud. “Fast, reliable, affordable internet is a necessity for enterprise cloud to prosper.”

Timing is also important, he adds. “We’re expecting a significant shift to cloud over the next five years as companies reach the end of their hardware cycles. It doesn’t make sense to move to cloud if you’ve just upgraded all your hardware and have everything under warranty. But, when the next replacement cycle rolls around, that’s the perfect time to make a move.”

Choosing the right provider

There are several new entrants joining the colocation stalwarts like Teraco in the local market, including Vantage’s new data centre; as well as Oracle building a cloud presence in SA, IBM’s SAP-based cloud offering, and Huawei recruiting new resellers, which is all good news for the growing cloud market, says Cruise.

But moving to cloud should not be done on a whim, he warns. “Do proper analysis of the contract and of the provider, and, critically, whether they’re right for your business needs. Be careful of services at heavily discounted rates – could they be based on ageing out-of-warranty hardware? Many organisations have been lured into discounted contracts, only to find out two years later that they’re locked in and suddenly having to pay large fees and remain contractually bound for a few more years.”

Routed has recently taken a vendor-like approach to its own business, enabling it to provide partners with the best cloud solutions for their customers. Cruise explains: “We are engaged with distributors here in SA that are already distributing Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure to reseller partners, who are selling that on to the end-users, and we’ve led the market by recently launching the VMware Cloud equivalent here. We use ISP, MSP, IT support companies and developers as our partners because they’re experts in the provision of specialist services and managing their client relationships, while we focus on presenting our VMware Cloud service interface and make sure that it’s available. And that’s really what people want from the cloud.”

Whether its working from home, the office or anywhere in-between, organisations and their staff are demanding solutions that are flexible and scalable as the world adapts. “Cloud is that solution, but it will come down to the partner that supports the transition that will make or break the decision forever, so organisations need to take care, and choose wisely,” concludes Cruise.

Home-school Analysis Paralysis – How To Find The Right Match For Your Child

With the exponential growth in the number of parents choosing to home-school their children over the past year, the market has responded with an explosion of new offerings. However, a more consequential example of “buyer beware” will be hard to find, as the home-school/online school environment is still not well regulated locally. Parents may find that this critical investment in their children may disappoint, an education expert says.

“Home-schooling can be a wonderfully rewarding path for both child and parent under the right circumstances, but with increased choice comes increased risk,” warns Colin Northmore, Principal at Evolve Online School, a brand of ADvTECH, Africa’s largest private education provider.

He says with increased choice, there is also, unfortunately, an increased risk of parents finding themselves in a situation of analysis paralysis and the potential of choosing a programme that does not deliver on its promises.

“Some programmes may look great on the surface, with slick marketing and novel gimmicks distracting from an interrogation of the actual substance and curriculum. So before making this consequential decision about which home-school programme to choose, we urge all parents to do their homework thoroughly,” Northmore says.

“Luckily”, He says, “this evaluation does not need to be based on a parent’s gut feeling or little more than a stab in the dark. Parents can ask specific questions to determine the likelihood of positive outcomes for the child. A parent can create a matrix with the following six headings:

CURRICULUM

Parents should choose the philosophy of learning and the examining body carefully. It is essential to understand that there are traditional and alternative offerings. For example, an IEB Matric is locally and internationally recognised. It opens doors for students in terms of study and career options.

If the provider uses an alternative curriculum, they need to explain how it differs from traditional curricula and how it benefits your child’s educational journey. Regardless of the curriculum basis, a good programme must demonstrate that it encourages cross-curricular linking and application to real-life scenarios. Subjects should not exist in silos. The content should enable children to identify and use cross-curricular links. A Project-based learning approach ensures integration between subjects.

While the above might sound complicated, a good provider should respond to the queries and easily explain their application in their programmes.

LOCAL VS INTERNATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Parents need to look at the local vs international requirements for acceptance into tertiary institutions when considering the examining body.

TRACK RECORD

Parents should investigate an institution’s track record and backing to avoid falling prey to unreliable or fly-by-night providers. Suppose they are a standalone organisation without any track record. In that case, parents can look at their associations and get a feel for the brand on their social media channels. This approach is risky, so opting for an offering that can demonstrate that it is backed by an organisation with a strong track record in education can provide greater peace of mind.

REAL-LIFE EXTENSION

A good programme is going to require more than a laptop and some pens and paper. For instance, at Evolve Online, the Foundation Phase and Intermediate Phase, students work on iPads with top-notch apps to enhance their learning journey. However, to take their learning journey off-screen, Foundation Phase students receive Adventure Boxes, which contain fun educational materials that integrate with their live lessons and activities, promoting the balance between screen time and green time (off-screen time). Working with these tangible items help students move from concrete to abstract thoughts. It also ensures that all students have a base point or single reference that their entire class uses.

Suppose a programme promises only information dumps and some online lessons. In that case, this should be a warning sign that the home-school journey might not be sustainable in the long term.

Parents need to determine how much time their children will spend online, whether students will attend live online classes, interact with other students, and how big classes are (yes, this still matters even online). Some Online Schools will have students sitting in online classes the entire day – mirroring a brick-and-mortar school. However, actual learning occurs when technology is used to enhance learning, not when students sit behind the screen the whole day.

TESTIMONIALS

It would be best if you always spoke to parents who are already part of a home-school/online school programme to gain insight into a programme’s quality. First-hand experience is an essential indicator of delivery on promises. Determine what you as a parent want from a programme and what your non-negotiables are. These are great questions to run by current parents.

PROGRESS MEASUREMENT AND FEEDBACK

If not careful, measurement and feedback can fall through the cracks in an online/home-schooling environment. Parents should therefore consider if the service provider’s tools are adequate in measuring their child’s progress. A Live Reporting System, for instance, provides access to real-time data and information on a child’s progress. The system should break the info down to any specific activities that have not been completed yet. It must also guide students on the tasks they could resubmit to improve their mastery level. Such a system is essential in the online and home-school environment.

“Finally, parents should ensure they match the provider and curriculum to the personality of their child. Critically, parents must also understand how significant the role is that they would need to fulfil in their child’s learning,” concludes Northmore.

African Leadership Group Leverages AWS To Power New Recruitment Platform For Hiring Diverse Top Talent

African Leadership Group’s ‘The Room’ – powered by AWS – will match at least 2 million young Africans and several million more from other continents to global work opportunities by 2030

African Leadership Group (ALG) today announced a commitment to create a scalable solution for connecting highly skilled, diverse global talent to in-demand technical careers. ALG’s mission is to transform Africa by identifying, training, and connecting Africa’s top talent to employment opportunity.

ALG will leverage Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology to expand ALG’s reach to on-board millions of talented individuals in Africa, Asia, Latin America, North America, and Europe and match them with career opportunities. This will enable global companies to access new technology talent in areas like full stack software engineering, cloud computing, data science, product management, cybersecurity, machine learning, AR/VR, and UX/UI design, and at the same time build more diverse and agile technology teams.

ALG’s talent matching solution, The Room, provides customised career advancement through mentorship, high impact relationships with global leaders, challenging opportunities and continued learning. The Room has developed a high-touch solution that connects undiscovered talent to meaningful career opportunities, but its current approach relies on manual processes that cannot be efficiently scaled.

“As the rest of the world ages, Africa remains the youngest continent in the world. We aim to unlock this large pool of untapped talent by identifying and training millions of young Africans in critical areas of technology. We will also invite extraordinary talent from around the globe to join our talent community in The Room. We see a tremendous opportunity to address the global technology skills shortage while enhancing diversity,” said Fred Swaniker, founder of ALG. “We are excited to work with AWS to scale The Room to the next level by implementing an advanced digital backbone.”

ALG used AWS to develop The Room Intelligence Platform (TRIP), a secure technical solution built using best of breed AWS technologies. TRIP will use a Data Lake built on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), containerized microservices using AWS Fargate, and Amazon SageMaker for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).

“The pandemic has highlighted the gaps and inequitable access to the digital literacy, employment and entrepreneurship skills that are needed to innovate, compete for jobs, or start businesses in a digital economy,” said Sandy Carter, vice president for Worldwide Public Sector Partners and Programs at AWS. “We are excited that the realm of what is possible for The Room can be enhanced as they execute their mission to grow diversity within the current workforce through investments in relationships and career opportunities.”

ALG has 17 years of experience helping diverse talent realise their full potential, and has selected, developed and connected more than 30,000 leaders so far. ALG was recognised as one of the 50 most innovative companies in the world by Fast Company in 2019 and is widely seen as one of the most innovative organizations in the world when it comes to human capital development. Those in search of qualified, diverse talent. Can register on The Room to connect.

George will discuss the topic titled “An exploration: Personal Career Journey spanning five continents”.

He will share his inspirational journey of his personal career that has seen plenty of change, including an academic shift from the sciences to corporate strategy and global work experience.

Professor Magnate Ntombela, principal of MANCOSA, said the unemployment rate in South Africa reached an all-time high of 34.4% during the second quarter of the year. Hence, this makes it critical for educational institutions to encourage skills designed for the workplace.

Ramaphosa To Have Vaccine Mandates Matter Voncluded Quickly

Cyril Ramaphosa and the National Coronavirus Command Council will meet this week to discuss, among other issues, a report from the task team set up to explore vaccine mandates.

Ramaphosa briefed reporters on Sunday night, after a two-day visit to Accra, Ghana, en route to Senegal for government’s four nations trip to West Africa.

The NCCC could meet as early as Wednesday with Ramaphosa stressing that there needed to be a report on the table as he wanted the vaccines mandates matter concluded quickly.

“With the rising wave of infections, we need to act quickly so that Cabinet can take a decision on this matter and of course it could all be slowed down by the intensity of consultations,” he said.

He is, however, unsure of the progress of the task team.

“The task team is meant to be active and when the NCCC meets, I’m expecting a report from the task team that we’ve set up as well as a report from the inter-ministerial committee.”

Legal Battle against Shell Is Far From Over – Activists

The legal battle to halt oil giant Shell’s seismic survey off South Africa’s wild coast is not over.

On Friday, environmental campaigners lost their bid in the Makhanda High Court to urgently interdict the survey.

And on Sunday, dozens of protests were held across the country’s shorelines to raise awareness around the harm the activity may have.

Strategic lead for the Green Connection, Liz McDaid, said although advocates couldn’t convince the judge of the irreparable damage to the marine ecosystem, it didn’t mean it wasn’t still happening.

“There’s enough evidence to show that a high number of animals would be impacted but all of that needs a considered and hard evidence of harm, but with an urgent interdict, that’s extremely difficult.”

In two weeks’ time, another group of legal conservationists will try gathering more evidence as they approach the court for relief again.

“There is another group that is going to take on another interdict. They will have the same high bar to jump but I think they’ll have more evidence that can be brought to the court.”

MTN Makes Covid-19 Vaccines Mandatory For Its Employees

Mobile telecommunications company MTN has become the latest big corporate to announce a planned vaccine mandate policy for all staff.

In a statement on Monday, the group said the move forms part of its efforts to protect the health and safety of staff.

The MTN Group said it would be implementing a mandatory vaccination policy for in January.

“The science is clear. Vaccination against COVID-19 reduces rates of serious infections, hospitalisation, and death. As an employer, we have a responsibility to ensure that our workplaces are guided by the highest standards of health and safety, and that has informed our decision to make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for our staff,” said MTN group president and chief executive officer Ralph Mupita.

“Our new Covid-19 policy recognises that some of our markets don’t have adequate access to vaccines. It also recognises some low-risk roles that will be accommodated with full-time work-from-home or alternate arrangements, but this will be a small population within our workforce.”

MTN said it recognised the right of employees with what it termed “clearly defined grounds” to be exempted from the policy and refuse vaccination.

But for those staff not exempt from the policy through risk assessment or agreed upon exclusions who refuse to get vaccinated, MTN said it would not be “obliged to keep them in employment”.

“For those staff who are not exempt from vaccinations either through risk assessment or agreed exclusions but still refuse vaccination, MTN will not be obliged to continue the employment contract.”

MTN Independent’s non-executive chairman Mcebisi Jonas has been in West Africa during the state and official visits by the South African government as part of businesses delegation where the issue of mandatory vaccines was also discussed.

A Blow to Tourism Means a Blow to Conservation

The pandemic has had a catastrophic effect on African nations on many levels. As vaccine equality debates and larger political concerns escalate, significant challenges on the ground are escalating, too, related to containing poaching and the illegal animal trade. Simply put, when Covid curtails tourism, jobs disappear and the poaching of wildlife for profit accelerates. Due to the lucrative nature of the trade, poaching for everything from rhino tusks and pangolin to simple bushmeat has always existed, but it is accelerating at an alarming rate.

A Cosy, Cairo Bookshop Away from the Hustle and Bustle

When Diwan opened its doors in 2002, even the concept of such a bookshop was an anomaly in Cairo. Because no comparable bookshops existed in Cairo, essentially everything had to start from scratch, Wassef writes in her memoir – from the process of acquiring the books to making up for the widespread lack of ISBN numbers (the international identification system for book sales). In their design, the founders drew inspiration from other beloved bookshops, like Shakespeare and Company in Paris and Rizzoli in New York. They put English-language books on display on one side and Arabic on the other. A cosy cafe sat in the middle, inviting customers to stay to read or chat.

A Cable Car Up Kilimanjaro

Tanzanian tourism authorities said on Tuesday they were in final preparations to start a process of introducing cable car on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. In Dec. 2020, Paul Banga, the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) assistant conservation commissioner for national parks development, said the government of Tanzania has approved the installation of a cable car on Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Kilimanjaro, one of Tanzania’s leading tourist destinations, is about 5 895 meters above sea level, with roughly 50 000 climbers from across the world attempting to reach the summit of the mountain annually.

Zambia Halts Plans to List Heritage Site

Plans to have Zambia’s Barotse Plains listed as a World Heritage site under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have been halted by Zambian authorities. The campaign named ‘From Barotse to the World’ was designed by the Zambian government to bring attention to the unique landscape and culture of the Barotse Plains. The natives have expressed their worries that once declared a World Heritage Site, the Barotse Plains will be sold. The plans have now been put on pause to allow stakeholders to have further discussions and consultations regarding the course of the campaign. The Zambian government has emphasised the significance of declaring the Barotse Plains a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it would increase tourism in the country. Sikumba insisted that the ‘From Barotse to the World’ campaign does include selling the Zambian land or negatively impacting the local population.

A Surfing Vacation in Kenya’s Watamu

African surfing destinations like Senegal and South Africa have gained worldwide recognition, but there are still many places along the continent’s 18,950 miles of coastline that continue to be overlooked by travelers—Kenya is just one case in point. “If you want to go off the beaten path to a place that has the establishment to support you in terms of accommodation and restaurants, then Kenya would be the destination for you,” says Ben Kelliher, the Kenyan-born owner of Tribe Watersports in Watamu. This spot, which is considered best for experienced surfers, offers a rare chance to ride waves up to six feet tall along a coral reef. Kelliher says that a busy day on the 4.5-mile long beach will see 20 surfers in the water, when a similar destination elsewhere might have 200. Plus, the spot is only an hour-and-a-half drive from safari adventures in Tsavo National Park.
